Full analysis of Daniel 9:27

Why does this matter ? This important because it is the finality of what prophetic scholars call the 70th week of Daniel. And so then you ask what is the 70th week of Daniel ? Now I am not an expert on this but I will offer a quick overview and feel free to do your own research on the 70th week of Daniel.

  • The Prophecy:The prophecy in Daniel 9:24-27 outlines a period of 70 weeks (490 years) of prophecy, specifically relating to the nation of Israel and the events surrounding the Messiah.
  • Seventy Weeks Total:The prophecy indicates that the seventy weeks are divided into two periods: 69 weeks (483 years) and the remaining one week (seven years).
  • The First 69 Weeks:The first 69 weeks, leading up to the destruction of the temple in 70 AD, are seen to be fulfilled in the events surrounding the ministry and death of Jesus.
  • The Gap:A gap is seen between the end of the 69 weeks and the beginning of the 70th week, a period of time during which God is focused on the Church and other nations.
  • The 70th Week:The 70th week is the final seven years, which is interpreted as the tribulation period

Here is Daniel 9.24-27

24 “Seventy ‘sevens’ are decreed for your people and your holy city to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the Most Holy Place.

25 “Know and understand this: From the time the word goes out to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until the Anointed One, the ruler, comes, there will be seven ‘sevens,’ and sixty-two ‘sevens.’ It will be rebuilt with streets and a trench, but in times of trouble. 26 After the sixty-two ‘sevens,’ the Anointed One will be put to death and will have nothing. The people of the ruler who will come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. The end will come like a flood: War will continue until the end, and desolations have been decreed. 27 He will confirm a covenant with many for one ‘seven.’ In the middle of the ‘seven’ he will put an end to sacrifice and offering. And at the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him

Now let us dissect Daniel 9:27

It starts as “And he shall strengthen a covenant with many”

So this implies that there may not be a new covenant but a confirmation of an existing one.And some think this is about the Abraham Accords and that may be given new strength.

Another thing is that the word used for to strengthen (higbir) also can mean a man of great wealth and power and there are certainly many men of great power about these days.

The next part says “for one week” which most believe means 7 years and I’ll go with that because I have not heard a different explanation.

And then it says “And in a half of a week it will cease, the sacrifice and the offering (specifically a grain offering ,which was traditionally at least for thanksgiving)”

At this point it is implied a sacrificial system in a new Temple in Jerusalem has started and if one week is seven years then halfway through is three and a half years. After 3 and a half years of the offering it stops and the implication is that someone stopped it.

Next phrase is literally “upon a wing” (al k’naf) and this often is interpreted as “on high” .But could it also refer to an airplane or wealthy men who own private jets.Or some have suggested the wing refers to either the USA or Rome (Europe) because a eagle symbolizes both and the wing is an eagle.

The next is a disgusting state of desolation that will exist until its full destruction.Whether it is destroyed by the person (likely the anti Christ) who set it up or finally destroyed by God.

Finally it states “determination (or judgement) will be poured out on the desolate (likely the anti Christ)”

Although most translations say determination is poured out on the evil person in question but the text only says “poured out on the desolate”

Which could mean the Temple in its desolate state or the desolate person who caused the desolation.

Here is the commentary of Rashi (Rabbi Shlomo Yitzchaki)

will strengthen. Titus [will strengthen] a covenant with the princes of Israel.
for one week. He will promise them the strengthening of a covenant and peace for seven years, but within the seven years, he will abrogate his covenant.
he will abolish sacrifice and meal-offering. This is what he says in the first vision (8:26): “and in tranquility he will destroy many.” Through a covenant of tranquility, he will destroy them.
and on high, among abominations will be the dumb one. This is a pejorative for pagan deities. i.e., on a high place, among abominations and disgusting things, he will place the dumb one, the pagan deity, which is dumb like a silent stone.
high. Heb. כְּנַף, lit. wing, an expression of height, like the wing of a flying bird.
and until destruction and extermination befall the dumb one. and the ruling of the abomination will endure until the day that the destruction and extermination decreed upon it [will] befall it, in the days of the king Messiah.
befall the dumb one. Heb. תִּתַּךְ, reach; and total destruction will descend upon the image of the pagan deity and upon its worshippers.

So what are my thoughts on this ,well first of all I do believe in a rapture of the Church before the desolation begins at some point which I believe is soon.

However I do not have strong direction here and there are so many 70th week of Daniel theories out there anyway likely smarter than mine. But I hope I offered a new perspective on this and give people some insight.I think there is meaning on the choice of the meal or grain offering specifically and also using the word “wing” as opposed to other great many words that could have symbolized high place.I think there is something there also.

God Bless and leave questions in the comments.
